What are the effects of Pepper Spray?

Pepper spray is used in self-defense and works as an inflammatory agent with the desired effect of involuntary eye closure. Pepper spray attacks the mucous membranes and respiratory system and causes the assailant’s eyes to clamp shut and be overcome with uncontrollable coughing, temporary blindness, and the attacker is left in pain for a least 30 minutes to an hour.
Pepper spray works by attacking the respiratory system by causing the lining of the throat to swell and limit airflow. The chemical in pepper spray hits the eyes and the capillaries dilate and the eyes slam shut. Dilation of the pupils makes give the eyes temporary blindness. Rubbing the eyes make it worse because capsaicin is oil-based. Oil-based substances like baby oil and milk will help neutralize the effects of pepper spray.
